The medical litigation practice area is clearly complex, can be difficult to navigate and for many, can be even harder to understand. Medical Litigator, now available on WestlawNext, is built to help legal professionals understand and learn medical terms, conditions, procedures, devices, and drugs, which in turn enables them to more confidently evaluate and litigate medical cases. It also enables them to communicate more effectively with their clients and medical professionals with whom they are working.

Medical Litigator has been upgraded to be more user-friendly, easing the ability to simultaneously search a wide variety of medical guides and summaries, medical journals and abstracts, legal texts and resources, case law, jury verdicts, and medical illustrations, the latter of which can be used as exhibits in trials. Search results can be easily narrowed to view only content that users consider most important for their particular case. For example, a user may choose to view only search results for medical illustrations or medical journals.

Legal professionals can leverage Medical Litigator to:

  • Learn and understand the key issues of a case;
  • Understand medical terms and issues (causation, standard of care, severity of injury);
  • Research current litigation, verdicts, settlements;
  • Locate health care professionals and expert witnesses; and
  • Discuss information with medical experts.

Additionally, Medical Litigator on WestlawNext provides a “Learn About,” which provides a high-level summary of a disease, injury, medical device or drug. These

summaries also are available by way of linked medical terms and drugs embedded within case law and analytical content. Medical Litigator also will take general terms, such as heart attack, and provide a list of medical-related terms. For example, Cardiac Infarction, Inferior Myocardial Infarction, Lateral Myocardial Infarction, Microinfarction of Heart, Non-Q Wave Myocardial Infarction, etc. Users can select any of those related terms to be included in their Medical Litigator search.

Furthermore, medical license information is available to verify the license status of a physician or other medical professional.

Medical Litigator ultimately helps users assess claims, educate themselves and clients, find authoritative sources, and bring effectiveness and efficiency to work requiring both medical and legal information.

Thomson Reuters Legal Professional Online Community for small law firms

Legal Online CommunityAs you may have heard, Thomson Reuters recently launched a community for its small law firm customers. The Legal Professional Online Community is an online environment where customers can connect directly with peers, as well as with Thomson Reuters and industry experts, and explore and discuss small law firm-specific subjects and topics.

The Legal Community is available at no cost to Thomson Reuters small law firm customers with FindLaw INSIGHT and WestlawNext access. A one-time Community registration is required at initial login. Access outside of these two sources is in development and will be available sometime later this year.

So what makes this community different from other online communities? For one, select Thomson Reuters and industry experts are available to answer questions and share insights to help customers manage and grow their practice more effectively. In addition, the Community is a closed environment exclusive to customers, and is moderated by Thomson Reuters. This makes the Community a more certain environment where attorneys can interact with confidence.

“We’re excited to welcome our WestlawNext small law firm and FindLaw INSIGHT customers into the Legal Professional Online Community,” said Michelle Wildenauer, senior director of Market Development at Thomson Reuters. “We hope the Community becomes our customers’ go-to source to ask questions of other attorneys, connect with Thomson Reuters experts, and get tips on how to better manage and grow their business.”

The “Share with Community” function

The “Share with Community” function

Customers can also share WestlawNext content with their colleagues and other Community members with the “Share with Community” feature. WestlawNext is the first product to leverage the social platform’s clip and share widget, which allows customers to highlight up to 250 characters of WestlawNext text and share it directly into the community. The post in the Community automatically pulls in the highlighted text along with a link back to the original content in WestlawNext.

“This integration between the Community and WestlawNext is an exciting enhancement to the attorneys’ workflow,” said Rose Ostrow, head of Social Platforms at Thomson Reuters. “The clip and share widget is a great example of how the platform can be more deeply integrated into products and websites.”

The Power of Connection and Business Law Center on WestlawNext

“The Power of Connection” is the theme for this year’s AALL Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. Most would agree that “connection” is meant in a personal sense – the conference is our chance to connect with our peers and colleagues in order to foster both business and personal relationships.

But “The Power of Connection,” in another sense, would make a great tagline for the Business Law Center (BLC) on WestlawNext. Throughout the original development of BLC, making connections between all the various sources of corporate legal information was the primary goal.

Related Info tabs on the Business Law Center

Related Info tabs on the Business Law Center

As a result, there are several BLC features that embody this theme – but none more than Related Info tabs. BLC streamlines research on transactions (like mergers or securities offerings) by creating a summary page for every deal. From the summary, it’s simple to use the Related Info tabs to access all available documents and information such as SEC filings, agreements, comment letters and related M&A deals.

BLC also makes some “powerful connections” by incorporating information and links from other Thomson Reuters products, such as Thomson Financial and Practical Law. Through its connection to Thomson Financial, BLC is able to provide a wealth of information on private mergers, loans and offerings that weren’t disclosed to the SEC. And many Practical Law Practice Notes now feature links directly to pre-set search results in the BLC, which enables a seamless flow from know-how research to precedent gathering.

If you are in Philadelphia for the AALL Annual Meeting this year and want more details on the “Power of Connection” in the Business Law Center, please stop by our Exhibitor Showcase in the Exhibit Hall Theater on Monday, July 20 from 1:30 – 2 p.m.
